Beijing's transport authority has warned commuters to expect even more gridlock in the coming days, as millions hit the road, heading both into and out of the capital, for the holidays.

北京交通管理当局提醒广大通勤客，由于节日期间数百万的车辆要进出北京城，未来几天内交通堵塞的情况会更加频繁。

根据交通性能指标——一个用从0到10的数值来表示交通拥堵状况的系统——昨晚间高峰期间北京城拥堵的水平达到了8.5，而在三环线上晚间7点的时候拥堵状况达到9.1，几乎可以用蠕动来描述。

【解读】

1.文中的congestion 就是交通拥堵的意思，它的动词原形为 congest vt.& vi. 使充血；拥堵：Congest degree of traffic交通拥挤度。

此外表示交通拥堵的方法还可用：traffic jam 来表示，而文中的 gridlock 原本意为“僵局”，也有交通阻塞的意思。rush hour 是表示交通高峰时间，一般在上下班的时候。
