在10月31日晚上惊骇的时刻，活着的塞尔特人会为了躲避灵魂的搜索，在这天晚会上把家里的炉火灭了，营造出一个寒冷阴森的环境，并刻意用动物的头或皮毛做成的服饰打扮自己成鬼怪的模样，口中发出可怕的声音，企图吓走灵魂也让灵魂分不清谁是活的人，而不能够找到替身;过了这个晚上，第二天就是万圣节，一切也就回复平静了
